We are presenting for sale an original KELLY FREAS book drawing done for the book entitled CANVAS CONFIDENTIAL, a backwards glance at the World of Art. This image was not published. It is entitled HENRY VIII and is based off the original painting done by Hans Hoblin. Kelly has created the backside of the original painting. 15
This was done as a play on Kelly’s MAD work from the 1960’s. The book is illustrated with paintings from old masters and then Kelly would reverse the image and paint the opposite side – like two mirrors looking at each other. Most of this artwork has not been seen in over 40 years and it is a rare look at Kelly outside the MAD box. Kelly continued this series in his work for Crazy magazine years later. Along with many of the preliminary sketches to the book, both published and those for the planned second book, are the original paintings for the published art. So please check out all our Canvas artwork under the MAD section of our store.

We included a photograph in this listing of the original painting and the book that Kelly worked with when he created his drawing. They are not included in the sale of the drawing.

Kelly hand signed the drawing at the bottom.

The book was created and written by Sy Reit and Frank Jacobs. All paintings were done by Kelly Freas. The book was published by Dial Press in 1963.

The drawing measures 8″ x 10″ and is in VERY GOOD condition.

Only the drawing is being sold. No publication rights are being sold with the drawing.
