We are presenting for sale an original drawing entitled "SABER TOOTH TIGER #1" done for CANVAS CONFIDENTIAL - A backward glance at the world of art published in 1963 by Dial Press. This was done as a play on Kelly's MAD work from the 1960's. The book is illustrated with paintings from old masters and then Kelly would reverse the image and paint the opposite side - like two mirrors looking at each other. Most of this artwork has not been seen in over 40 years and it is a rare look at Kelly outside the MAD box. Kelly continued this series in his work for Crazy magazine years later. Along with many of the preliminary sketches to the book, both published and those for the planned second book, are the original paintings for the published art. The drawing bears Kelly's studio "bug" signature stamp and is in excellent condition.
